More Frames
Since my last article, the Christmas gift I got for my wife arrived. I initially reached out to the artist in the middle of September of 2024, so it’s been a long time coming. We’re pleased with the final product:
I planned to frame it myself, but after I did some research on how to frame canvas and saw that I’d need specialized tools and skills I decided to pay to have it put on stretchers and then add a frame myself later.
After finishing a big project like I just did, I prefer to do some quick tasks. With that in mind I started on doing some frames this weekend. A while back I ordered some art for the shop and other art for another portion of our home, with the express intention of framing it myself.
The first step to framing it, after last time, was to draw out some plans:
These plans make it clear what the outer dimensions are, which is the most important detail when building the frames.
I built prepared the first frame yesterday, but discovered at glue up time that I had accidentally sawn the mitres as if the 5/8” portion were the face, as opposed to the the 1/4” portion. I was able to salvage the long pieces and saw them to be the short portions of the frame, but it was still pretty annoying.
After that I shot the corners to 45degrees, but didn’t carefully verify that the parallel pieces were the same length. After glue up the frame was a little wonky:
